POETRY AND VERSE

Edel has written about 200 poems, and some have been published in magazines and collections. She writes both serious and humorous poetry.

Serious poetry is usually inspired by:

• things that happen to kids - 'Dental Visit', 'BMX Hero', 'Bruises and Blood', and 'Escape'
• interest in folklore and history - 'Water Monsters Five, 'Ghost Dog', 'The Guyra Poltergeist' and 'White Whiskers'.

Humorous poetry and nonsense verse
She likes playing with words and ideas, and verses spring to mind when she hears the madness of the English language.

• logical nonsense – 'Fish Fingers'
• limericks – 'Thoona or Later'
• invented words – 'Ruth's Tooth'
• absurd situations – 'Muddled Aunts and Uncles Shouldn't be Allowed to Keep Pets'
• place names – 'Toggannoggera'
• jokes in verse form – 'Fly-in' (There's a Fly in My Soup!)
• common sayings – 'Give the Horse His Head!'
• words with the same spelling, but two or more different meanings (homonyms) – 'Injury'
• words which look different, but are pronounced in the same way (homophones) 'Hoarse Horse'
• long verse stories – 'Paint the Town Red'.
